- Inform family or friends of your travel plans and intended route
- Check road conditions through road reports, road transport, police stations and locals
- Carry comprehensive maps
- Drive at a reduced speed on unsealed roads

- Mechanical tips
- Service your vehicle before the journey. Tell the mechanic you are leaving on a long road trip and carry spare spark plugs and fuses
- Check radiator and hoses, flush radiator and carry spare hoses
- Check fuel and temperature gauges are working
- Check fan belt for tension and cracking and carry a spare
- Check tyres, including spare(s), for wear, tread and inflation
- Tools: include wheel brace, jack, torch, jumper leads, tow rope
