Take a drive on the wild side.

  • Inform family or friends of your travel plans and intended route
  • Check road conditions through road reports, road transport, police stations and locals
  • Carry comprehensive maps
  • Drive at a reduced speed on unsealed roads
  • Carry extra spare tyres and tools
  • Obey road closure signs
  • Hire emergency communication equipment e.g. satellite phones
  • Note that mobile phones have limited coverage across the Nullarbor
  • Download the Emergency+ app 
  • Report road conditions to locals if you have arrived from a location that is ‘off the beaten track’
  • Service your vehicle before the journey. Tell the mechanic you are leaving on a long road trip and carry spare spark plugs and fuses
  • Check radiator and hoses, flush radiator and carry spare hoses
  • Check fuel and temperature gauges are working
  • Check fan belt for tension and cracking and carry a spare
  • Check tyres, including spare(s), for wear, tread and inflation
  • Tools: include wheel brace, jack, torch, jumper leads, tow rope
